April Travels

April was a busy month for us (towards the end, anyway). Our travels took us from Disneyland, to Chicago, and on to San Diego. Fun!

I had a conference in Chicago, and we had planned to fly out a few days early to do some sight-seeing. However, mechanical problems with our plane meant that our departure from Long Beach was delayed for a day. So, we did what anyone with an extra day in Orange County would do: we went to Disneyland!

After a fun-filled day of rides and frozen bananas in the Magic Kingdom, we departed for Chicago. We had a blast eating deep-dish pizza, craning our necks looking at skyscrapers, and gazing at paintings at the Art Institute. Robby also got to take an architecture cruise on the Chicago river while I went to presentations on library software. :) We both agreed that the highlight of our trip was a visit to the restaurant on the 96th floor of the John Hancock building.

Less than 24 hours after returning to Pasadena, Robby’s parents arrived from Mississippi. We spent 2 days exploring San Diego, starting with a trip to the Wild Animal Park. It was definitely a trip to get so close to wild animals! Our favorites were the giraffes, rhinos, and elephants. Two baby elephants were born at the park this spring, so we spent lots of time basking in the cuteness. :)

After a day at the Wild Animal Park, we headed out bright and early for a trip to the U.S.S. Midway museum. The Midway is a decommissioned aircraft carrier, and it’s been restored with lots of interesting exhibits and historic aircraft. Robby had a blast exploring the planes and listening to the audio tour. I wasn’t sure I would enjoy spending the day on an aircraft carrier, but even I was impressed.

After walking around the harbor and driving through downtown San Diego, we headed back to Pasadena to recover from our adventures. The day before Robby’s parents headed home, Carol helped me shop for and plant a bunch of flowers and patio trees (roses, a pear tree, strawberries, tomatoes, gardenias, and jasmine). I love my newly verdant patio and balcony! I can’t wait to spend summer evenings lounging on the patio.

Our April travels definitely kept us busy. Next up: a trip to Nashville and a side trip to visit our favorite nephew in Birmingham. We can’t wait!

Mountain High board-fest 2010 (aka, “Kim & Robby go snowboarding”)

Robby and I both had last Friday off, and somehow I allowed him to talk me into a snowboarding trip. So, bright and early on Friday morning, we pulled on our snow gear and headed up to the Mountain High ski resort with our friend Abe.

It was a perfect day for snowboarding, slightly overcast but not too cold. I was scared that one of us was going to get hurt (especially after Robby’s last ski trip, which left him with a partially torn ACL), so we signed up for beginner lessons. The lessons were kind of a waste of money, because I could barely hear the instructor through my helmet! I definitely learned more by listening to tips from Abe.

We ended up spending the day on the beginner slopes, just trying to see how far we could go without falling on our butts. I spent a lot more time on the ground than I wanted, which meant that by lunch time I was exhausted from the effort of trying to push myself up–I didn’t realize how hard it would be to get up with my feet strapped to a 5′ long board!

After falling a lot, I was finally able to make it down the slope a few times in the “falling leaf” pattern, and I was proud of myself for that. Although we were both tired and sore by the end of the day (and even more sore the next day!), snowboarding was more fun than I was expecting. I’d definitely do it again sometime!

Here are some pictures of us shredding the beginner slopes.

Anniversary trip

For our first anniversary, Robby surprised me by planning a trip to the Blue Lantern Inn in Dana Point, CA. It was pretty much the perfect weekend! We rode bikes down to the harbor, watched the surfers at the beach, and relaxed. I had a fantastic massage at the spa, and Robby thoroughly enjoyed the inn’s free wine and cheese hour on Saturday afternoon. :)

A California Adventure

Robby and I decided to be spontaneous this past Saturday, so instead of finishing the baseboards in our living room we took off for Disney’s California Adventure park. We had a great time riding the rides and eating free tortillas at the tortilla factory exhibit. :)

Our favorite ride by far was Soarin’ Over California, a glider tour of some famous California sights. It reminded me that California isn’t all that bad!
